Bio

Although my career has spanned mechanical engineering and neuroscience, the underlying motivation has remained the same: understanding how things work and building the tools needed to understand them. Along the way, I’ve worked across hardware design, software development, signal processing, computational modeling, and biological research, most recently with a focus on sleep.

My path into neuroscience began as a personal research project. Interested in objectively measuring the physiology of meditation, I found the available tools limiting, so I built my own hardware and software to measure and analyze heart rate variability during meditation and sleep. As the project grew, so did my interest in the underlying science. That led to a long-term academic collaboration and, eventually, a PhD in neuroscience.

I’ve found that the questions I enjoy pursuing rarely fit neatly within a single discipline. That has been a recurring theme throughout my career, often leading me into unfamiliar fields, methods, and technologies. The most rewarding work for me is pursuing questions that require building something that didn’t exist before and learning entirely new skills along the way.
